Stations of the Cross
A Self-Guided Prayer Experience
(Play the video to start)
The fourteen Stations of the Cross are snapshots in Jesus’ life beginning with his prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, through his arrest and crucifixion, culminating with his burial in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea. Different church traditions have included different “snapshots”, but these fourteen moments are intended to help you walk through the Biblical story, remembering what Jesus did for you and how he paid for your own sin and rebellion.
As you move through each station, try doing the following:
- Take time to consider each picture, and imagine the moment: the emotions, the conversations, the different people present (or absent).
- Read the passage(s) of scripture that accompany each image.
- Pray: Thank Jesus for what he went through on your behalf, or confess your sin and brokenness, or ask for his help in your life, or listen to the Holy Spirit and ask him to help you pray. You can pray to yourself, or you can write out a prayer to the Lord in the space provided.
1. Jesus Prays in the Garden
Luke 22:39-44
39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
Pray on your own or write out a prayer to the Lord.
2. Jesus Betrayed by Judas
John 18:2-6
2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. 3 So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”
5 “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.
“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
Pray on your own or write out a prayer to the Lord.
